Review: In Praise of Wasting Time

Image
The last five years have brought to the fore voices telling us the dangers of too much screen time and online addiction. In Praise of Wasting Time adds its voice to the saturated space about the dangers of modern technology, the advantages of slowing down, and what we are losing by addiction to modern comforts. WHO WOULD ENJOY IT? Anyone looking tocut back on digital exposure might learn a thing or two here. IS IT WORTH READING? Yes, it is.However, if you have read a similar book to this in the past, there is no guarantee this book will give a new perspective or say anything you do not already know. The author's writing is clear and the examples he uses are engaging, but you are in a danger of getting bored if you have read similar books. Review: The Book of Highs: 255 Ways to Alter Your Consciousness without Drugs

Image
The Book Of Highs summarises over 200 different ways of achieving a high-level of consciousness without the use of drugs. WHO WOULD ENJOY READING IT? Contrarians. Also, people seeking to quit drug habit might find a bit of use out of this. WHAT I LOVE ABOUT IT The book itself has a bit of information on many of the methods here in case the reader wants to do some research. Also, the information provided about how to get high has a bit of common sense to it. Most importantly, there is a lot of diversity as to the methods - from sensory awareness, to prayer, to spinning, to fasting and extra-sensory perception... there is something for everyone here. MEMORABLE PASSAGE "Drugs reinforce the illusion that highs come from external chemicals when, in fact, they come from the human nervous system. The practical consequence of this illusion-making tendency is that users find it hard to maintain their highs: one always has to come down after a drug high, and the down ca

Image
The Existentialist's Survival Guide examines few existentialist philosophers' view on what makes a human authentic and fulfilled WHO WOULD ENJOY READING IT? If you enjoy reading self-help books and essays on philosophical questions, then this is for you. Note that this book is written from the perspective of a Christian author, though most of the themes discussed - death, depression, faith, authenticity - are universal and the pool of philosophers examined is not just the religious ones. WHAT I LOVE ABOUT IT The depth of the discussion and the author's own personal experience makes reading the book an immersive experience. Wherever you are in your life stage and whatever problems you think you might have, I think borrowing new perspectives on life and how to navigate it is always a good thing. This book stares at the big questions and how all men can live a fulfilled existence. MEMORABLE PASSAGE "In depression, we are removed from the present, ma

The book also looks at the art of good journaling and how one can mine its information to enrich all other kinds of writing. WHO WOULD ENJOY READING IT? Writer of all kinds at different levels would benefit. MEMORABLE PASSAGE "The goal of the writer—whether traveler, memoirist, journalist, novelist, or one who keeps a log just for himself is to live with the keenness of the foreigner, to experience, wide-eyed, the sensations aroused and the events offered up by his peculiar surrounds and then to evoke them so brightly on the page that the reader, too, experiences the foreigner’s frisson: discovers him or herself invigorated, transported to another rich and miraculous life." ....... Chance Particulars: A Writer's Field Notebook for Travelers, Bloggers, Essayists, Memoirists, Novelists, Journalists, Adventurers, Naturalists, Sketchers, and Other Note-Takers and

Review: The Instinct for Cooperation

Image
The Instinct for Cooperation is a transcript (albeit in a graphic novel form) of discussions between Jeff Wilson, a PhD student and Noam Chomsky, a social activist and political critic, on various social and political themes. WHO WOULD ENJOY IT? Any person worried by the present socio-political issues in the western world will love reading this book. Young people in colleges and universities will definitely get some value from it. IS IT WORTH READING? Though this book did not offer any particular clear answers to issues like student debt, wage disparities, racial injustices, institutional violence, it did well to highlight causes as well as recent examples of the ways governmental powers are used to suppress the poor and the young. Aspiring activists and social campaigners will learn a lot from this book. Well worth reading. ----------- The Instinct for Cooperation by Jeff Wilson and Eliseu Gouveia is available to buy on all major online bookstores from April 2018

Review: In Praise Of The Useless Life: A Monk's Memoir by Paul Quenon

Image
In Praise Of The Useless Life is an exposition on what life in a monastery is like from the eyes of a monk who has spent decades in the "system". The book details the benefits of such style of living and what it can contribute to the society. WHO WOULD ENJOY READING IT? Anyone who wants to know how monks live and the atmosphere and politics around Trappist monasteries would like this. Fans of Thomas Merton would learn a thing or two about him from someone (the author) who was a student to him decades ago. WHAT I LOVE ABOUT IT Learning about the practical realities of dedicating your life to God behind the walls of a monastery was most illuminating. The advice in the book seems practical and it shows how to make the most of such a life and why it is a high vocation to pursue for those inclined. Those of us not sworn to such high calling can also learn a thing or two about the value of silence, prayers, music, humour, etc from the wisdom contained in this book. M

Review: Positively Izzy by Terri Libenson

WHO WOULD ENJOY READING IT? Fans of Dairy of the Wimpy Kid and the likes would love this book. WHAT I LOVE ABOUT IT The story is believable, interesting and held my interest till the end. Review: James Baldwin and the 1980s: Witnessing the Reagan Era by Joseph Vogel

Image
James Baldwin and the 1980s peers at few of Baldwin's articles and essays written around the eighties, examining its keys themes in the light of what is happening in the United States of America then and now. WHO WOULD ENJOY READING IT? Fans of James Baldwin's works should enjoy looking at this with fresh eyes. WHAT I LOVE ABOUT IT The examination of the background of every essay is valuable in understanding Baldwin's thinking (in some cases) and the reason why he adopted a certain tone when addressing some section of United States's personalities. MEMORABLE PASSAGE "In sharp contrast to Fire, a national bestseller, however, Evidence—both upon publication and today—is likely his most overlooked book. To date, Evidence has been reprinted once, on its tenth anniversary in 1995, by Owl Books. At the time of its first publication, in spite of the nation’s abiding interest in the case, Baldwin found the book difficult to publish. His longtime pub

Review: Sharp by Michelle Dean

Image
Sharp is a book that looks briefly at the lives of women who, despite having no power, made a living giving their written opinions on various aspects of American culture and subsequently affecting it in a profound way. WHO WOULD ENJOY READING IT? Budding writers will take a lot of hope from how these women (Hannah Arendt, Mary McCarthy, Susan Sontag, Pauline Kael, Joan Didion, etc) grew and metamorphosised their art into something powerful and valuable. WHAT I LOVE ABOUT IT This book is not just a biography but a piece of literary criticism. I was heartened to see how some of these women wrote and how their writing philosophy changed with time.  MEMORABLE PASSAGE "As her star rose, Sontag was determined to move away from criticism and essay writing. She started a third novel instead. She took up film, after receiving an offer from Sweden to make art films on a minuscule budget there. And she dropped abstract criticism in favor of writing directly about current e

Review: The Lost Path by Amélie Fléchais and Jonathan Garnier

Image
The Lost Path is a strange story of three boys lost in the wood. The tale follows them as they try to figure a way home while encountering monsters and strange creatures who are engaged in a long-running conflict that seems to be running into its climax. WHO WOULD ENJOY READING IT? Kids with a love of fantasy and adventure will take to this. WHAT I LOVE ABOUT IT The art is unique, however, the story itself seems to be going nowhere. It begins well but lacks coherence from the middle to the end. MEMORABLE PASSAGE ....... The Lost Path by Amélie Fléchais and Jonathan Garnier is available to buy on all major online bookstores. Many thanks to Lion Forge for review copy.
